City lights at night with stars above

About the NightGuard Initiative

The NightGuard Initiative is a nonprofit environmental group dedicated to protecting our skies, wildlife, and communities from the harmful effects of light pollution. Founded by astronomers, ecologists, and concerned citizens, we work across science, policy, and education to reclaim the natural night.

Light pollution—the excessive and misdirected use of artificial light—has become one of the fastest-growing environmental problems. It blocks our view of the stars, disrupts animal migration, interferes with human sleep, and wastes billions in energy. Despite its impact, light pollution is often overlooked because it feels less visible than other forms of pollution. But its consequences are real—and preventable.

At NightGuard, we believe the night sky is a shared heritage that belongs to everyone. Through public awareness campaigns, community lighting audits, policy advocacy, and partnerships with cities and schools, we aim to reduce unnecessary lighting and promote smart, efficient alternatives. From helping towns become certified “Dark Sky Communities” to building citizen-science tools that track brightness levels in neighborhoods, our mission is both practical and inspiring.

You don’t need a telescope to care about light pollution. Whether you're a stargazer, a parent worried about your child’s sleep, or a homeowner looking to cut your energy bill, everyone can play a role. This website is your starting point to learn, engage, and take action. We offer interactive tools, verified facts, and a growing network of local advocates pushing for better lighting design.

Join us in restoring the stars above and protecting the health of the world below. Because when we guard the night, we protect far more than just the dark.
